Taufik pulls out of All-England event

JAKARTA - INDONESIA'S Olympic badminton champion Taufik Hidayat has withdrawn from next month's All-England Championships.

The Indonesian media reported yesterday that he had fallen out with the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI).

He had disagreed with the association's decision to allow two men's doubles teams to compete in the tournament, despite the fact that they had broken regulations.

The players - Markis Kido, Luluk Hadiyanto, Alvent Yulianto and Flandy Limpele - had taken part in an event in Papua last December without the PBSI's consent.

The association had banned them from taking part in Swiss Open.

But Taufik, twice an All-England finalist and a former world champion, wanted them also to be barred from the March 6-11 event.

The decision reportedly upset Taufik and he threatened to pull out of the All-England unless PBSI changed course.

The talented 25-year-old has a history of off-court antics and frequent disputes with his national association.

PBSI officials with have confirmed the decision but failed to provide a reason, reported The Jakarta Post.

Said Lius Pongoh, the official in charge of training: 'We still have his ticket and hotel reservations. But Taufik will not compete at the All-England.'

The All-England title is the only major title Taufik has not won.

He told The Jakarta Post: 'I want it badly, but now I am facing this.'

First Chinese player in Champions League

EINDHOVEN - THE first Chinese player to appear in the Champions League is sure he will not be the last. Sun Xiang predicted that more of his countrymen will take part in Europe's top club tournament.

China's international defender played for PSV Eindhoven in their 1-0 win over Arsenal on Tuesday.

He joined the Dutch champions on loan last month from Shanghai Shenhua.

'I have just been luckier than the others. There are lots of Chinese players as strong as me,' he told Chinese Internet news service Sina.com.

'I am the first player but it is not about being first.

'The important thing for a player, from a relatively weak football playing nation, is to master what they need to know, to play at a higher level.'

'I haven't been here very long, but under these conditions, you have to shape up pretty fast.'

The 25-year-old left-back came on just after the hour mark as a substitute.

He said: 'I wasn't nervous. Every training session is like a match for us, so it was no different.

'The big challenge was figuring out how best to play a role in the game.'

Sun got high marks for his performance in the Chinese press, notably for his aggression, and for helping to close down Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor.

CapitaLand earns $40m from sale of office space

CAPITALAND has sold all its entire interest in the Samsung Hub office block to two different buyers for a gain of $40 million.

The entire divestment of space in the central business district building amounted to $152.9 million.

Property company Ho Bee Development has bought the first floor and the eighth to 14th floors from CapitaLand subsidiary China Square Holdings for $134.3 million, or $1,384 per sq ft.

Ho Bee Development is a subsidiary of Ho Bee Investment. The purchase is in line with its strategy of acquiring quality commercial properties in view of the strong outlook on the Singapore economy.

CapitaLand has also sold the 15th floor of the 30-storey office building in Church Street to Chinese Chamber Realty - the property arm of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry - for $18.6 million.

The sales come amid a booming market for office property with prime space at a premium.

Samsung Hub hit the headlines when a 0.1-degree tilt developed during construction in mid-2002 due to the soil settlement. The tilt was later corrected in a two-year rectification process by the building's contractor, Samsung Corporation.

CapitaLand spokesman Julie Ong said the company made a profit of $40 million from the sale of the office, which comprised its entire holding in Samsung Hub.
